Cockroach Facts

Of all the potential pests that can invade your home, cockroaches are perhaps the worst. Even for insects, they’re extremely disgusting. Still, even the most disgusting, invasive animals have some interesting attributes. Here are some interesting facts that you may not have known about cockroaches:

  • They have existed on this earth for hundreds of millions of years; they were alive when the dinosaurs walked the earth.
  • Over 4,000 different species of cockroaches now exist throughout the globe. 70 different types of species make their home in the United States. Only about 30 of these species make their home in human dwellings, and therefore the majority are not pests.
  • They can survive up to a month without eating anything, and up to 2 weeks without water.
  • Some species of female cockroaches only mate a single time, staying pregnant for their entire lives.
  • If they get decapitated, they can still stay alive for up to an entire week!
  • If submerged, they can stay alive for up to 40 minutes before they drown.
  • At top speed, they can run up to 3 miles an hour.
  • Cockroaches receive their necessary vitamins from bacteria that live inside them. Because of this, they are able to eat food with little to no nutritional value.

They may not be the most endearing animals out there, but they certainly can be interesting. Still, that doesn’t mean we want them in our homes.
